Cavallerizza and remains of the Royal AcademyThe two buildings constitutes part of the vast "power area" which goes from the new wing of the Royal Palace in via XX Settembre to the garages near via Rossini, comprehending the Royal Palace, the Armoury and the Royal Library, the Secretaries (now the Prefecture), the Archives, the Royal Theatre (Teatro Regio), the Mint (now the State Police), the stables. It is an architectonical and urban complex for bureaucratic, representative roles, for power and State services projected by Amedeo di Castellamonte in 1673 and completed, conforming to the changing necessities, by Filippo Juvarra, Benedetto Alfieri, Ernesto Melano, Carlo Mosca. Cavallerizza Reale The sleeves of the Academy, inaugurated in 1680 for the education of noble young Italians and foreigners and the court pages, overlooked a great porticoed yard with binate pillars, damaged in 1943 and then destroyed tin order to build the new Teatro Regio. To this core there are annexed four wings of cross stables, partly used by the court: in the first court, open to via Verdi, there are re-modelled columns and capitals coming from the porticoes of the Academy. In 1739-1740 Alfieri realised a new great circus rider for the academics; the stables, then, were finished in the 19th century on projects by Mosca (wing towards via Rossini) and by Melano (roundabout at the centre of the cross). Of the complex, partly freed by improper uses and already used as exhibition hall, there is work in progress. Information: Address: Via Verdi 9 Calculate the route |
