Church of San MassimoThe project of the church of San Massimo, already foreseen by the enlargement plan of the walking avenues of the Borgo Nuovo, was established by and architectural competition, where it was demanded a four-side isolated building, far from every idea of luxury and superficiality. Church of San Massimo In 1844 it was chosen the project of Carlo Sada and in the following year the works began. Financial problems delayed its construction and the church was inaugurated only on June 14th, 1853. The building has got elements that recalls a Greek cross plan, although it is developed in a longitudinal way with the bell tower in correspondence to the apse in a central position. The main façade distinguishes itself for the presence of a Corinthian pronaos; semi-pillars, also Corinthian, characterize the sides. Inside, the only nave is covered by a lacunar barrel vault, interrupted in the middle by a dome place on a pillared tambour both on the inside and on the outside. Information: |
