Church of San TommasoThe actual church of San Tommaso is the result of a remoulding of the 19th century of a pre-existent building: the intervention determined the change from the longitudinal plan to a central plan and the loss of a big part of the interior décor. Cited ever since 1351, the ancient church stood in the street which led to the Porta Marmorea and hosted the Padri Minori Osservanti; there were also a cloister and a convent. Church of San Tommasso The building underwent various interventions during the years, until 1885, where the whole area underwent a development project: the opening of the via Diagonale, the actual via Pietro Micca, that allows to connect Piazza Castello with Piazza Solferino. In this occasion the demolishment of the church was proposed, nevertheless in 1895 Carlo Ceppi received the task of projecting its withdrawal, demolishing a whole wing and realizing a new façade. The bent front has got two free pillars on a pedestal sided by pilasters; in the sides there are, in two niches, the statues of San Francesco and Sant'Antonio. Throughout a little staircase you arrive to the interior in Greek cross which keeps the bell tower cell, the apse area, the sacristy, the first arcade of side aisles dating back to the end of the 16yh century. On four central pillars is based the dome on tambour with oval opening. The décor of 1904 are made by the painter Fava. Information: |
