Church of Santa Maria del Monte (Monte dei Cappuccini)In 1583 the duke Carlo Emanuele I decided to begin the works for the construction of a church for the Capuchin friars consecrated to Santa Maria. The project of the church was entrusted to the engineer Giacomo Soldati, who laid down a building of central plan, and in 1610 Ascanio Vittozzi, first ducal architect, succeeded in the design of the building. Church of Santa Maria del Monte Carlo di Castellamonte succeeded Vittozzi and he finished the work. Inside, the strong protuberance of the eight pillars which support the high octagonal tambour emphasise the light and shade effect; since 1802 the dome was substituted by a cover in bricks which highly reduces the verticalism that characterises the project made by Vittozzi and underlined by the growing height of the openings. Moreover, on the inside, in the left altar, you can admire the Martirio di San Maurizio del Moncalvo; in the high altar a statue of the Madonna col Bambino was placed, but it was stolen in 1980. In the niches there are wooden statues form the workshop of Carlo Giuseppe Plura (about 1732), while in the choir are hung a crucifix by Bartolomeo Botto and nine paintings, among them one Annunciazione. Beside the church there is the Museo Nazionale della Montagna "Duca degli Abruzzi". Information: |
