Church of the Gran Madre di DioThe church, placet on the right side of the river, parallel to via Po, was built to celebrate the return of the king Vittorio Emanuele I (May 20th, 1814), after the defeat of Napoleon. Church of the Gran Madre A flight of steps, sided by the statue of Religion on the right and one of Faith on the left (works of art by Carlo Chelli), leads to the temple of neoclassical structure with hexastyle pronaos, erected by Ferdinando Monsignore between 1827 and 1831. In the circular interior plan are placed, starting from the right, the statues of San Maurizio, of the Blessed Margherita di Savoia, of the blessed Amedeo di Savoia, of San Giovanni Battista; in the high altar there is the Vergine col Bambino by Andrea Galassi; in the one on the right the Crucifix and in the one on the left the Sacro Cuore di Gesù, both by Edoardo Rubino. On the left side of the flight of steps you go down to the charnel house of the fallen of World War I (1915-1918). Information: |
