Via Po

Via Po was the axis of the second urbanistic enlargement, projected by Amedeo di Castellamonte in 1673; starting from piazza Castello the street takes you to the river Po, with an outlet on the 17th century piazza Vittorio Veneto.
With elegant uniformity, the beautiful palaces with unbroken arcades follow one another, linked by terraces in the north side and interrupted by the Baroque churches of San Francesco da Paola and of the SS. Annunziata.

The European reputation of Via Po, considered one of the "most beautiful large, straight and regular streets" is testified by the journals, mainly of the 18th century, of those who started or finished the "Italian" phase of the Grand Tour, with a stop in Turin.
Even though they were not unanimous, the opinions reported and impression of monumentality which went beyond the severe disposition and not yet definite of the uniform buildings of the 17th century street.

The north side has got crossing super arcades of the side streets, realized in 1819 with Doric columns on projects by Ferdinando Bonsignore an Ernesto Melano in order to obtain a covered walk for the king from piazza Castello towards piazza Vittorio Veneto.
